Our page Morelia Neo features the lightweight version of the famous shoe from Mizuno, made with very fine kangaroo leather and a snug fit. It comes in the rugby version with SG sole and screw-in studs, favoured by kickers and backs playing on soft grass, and in moulded soles for dry pitches. Our tips will guide you between the Beta, Japan, Elite, and Select versions.
The Morelia, but lighter.
The Morelia Neo continues the Morelia line, launched by Mizuno in 1985, with a different goal: to reduce weight to the absolute minimum. Its very thin kangaroo leather upper and contoured sole make it an especially light shoe, maintaining the barefoot feel desired by kickers. The foot is held without being cramped, and the leather softens further over time. In rugby, it is aimed at backs, halves, and kickers who want to feel the ball with every kick, whether it's a penalty in front of the posts or a throw found deep in the opposition's half.

The range is organized into distinct levels. The Beta, sometimes indicated by the Greek letter, is the most refined version, with an upper and sole redesigned for even more lightness. The mention Japan indicates manufacturing in Japan, with particularly careful finishes, while the Elite features a very similar construction without being made in Japan. The Select serves as the entry-level option, often available in children’s sizes. These levels combine with the sole: moulded for dry grass, AG for synthetic, Mix for a combination of moulded and screw-in studs, and SG for the heaviest grounds.
For winter rugby, the SG version, for Soft Ground, replaces the moulded studs with longer screw-in studs that penetrate a ground soaked in rain and prevent slipping during planting and striking. World Rugby regulations limit their length to twenty-one millimetres. The height of the studs is adjusted according to the condition of the pitch, and their tightness is checked with a stud key before each match. The very fine leather of the Morelia Neo requires regular care: brushing off mud, slow drying at room temperature with newspaper, followed by a light coat of leather cream. It fits snugly: stick to your usual size.
Good deals can be found in the good deals, promotions, clearance, sales, Black Friday. The new arrivals showcase the latest models. The key shopping times of the year follow a stable order: the Black Friday at the end of autumn, the holidays, the winter sales, the French Days of spring, followed by summer sales and back-to-school events.
Yes for backs and kickers, especially in its SG version with screw-in studs, which is best suited for winter pitches. Forwards, who bear the brunt in scrums, prefer a rugby shoe with a more reinforced upper.
It fits narrow and close to the foot, a shape designed for precision. Wide feet often feel cramped in it: they will find more comfort in the Monarcida from Mizuno, which has a more generous shape.
Both offer precise touch thanks to the kangaroo leather. The Neo, lighter and more fitted, suits the kicker who runs a lot; the classic Morelia, more comfortable, is preferred by those who prioritize foot hold throughout the season.
It is thin, thus more sensitive to abrasion and drying out compared to synthetic options. When well dried and regularly nourished, it remains supple; however, avoid exposing it to a source of heat or letting it stay damp in a bag.
Yes, the Select version is available in children's sizes, with a moulded sole for dry grass. It offers young players the fit of the range at a more accessible level before switching to screw-in studs in their teenage years.
