Our shoes Under Armour page showcases the studded shoes from the Baltimore brand, when available, for rugby players dedicated to a craft born from compression. It traces the history of the brand founded by Kevin Plank, his years alongside the Welsh national team, and provides our tips for choosing the right sole and size for your pitch.
From compression to studs.
Under Armour was born in 1996 from the frustration of a college athlete in Maryland, Kevin Plank, tired of cotton t-shirts that soaked up sweat under his gear. He noticed that his compression shorts stayed dry and had a top made from a synthetic material that wicks away sweat. The adventure began in his grandmother's basement in Washington, before the company settled in Baltimore in 1998, where its headquarters still is. The HeatGear range, a breathable base layer for warm efforts, built its reputation, and then the brand expanded its expertise to sports footwear.

European rugby discovered Under Armour on the red shirt of Wales. The American brand signed an agreement with the Welsh federation in 2008 and then dressed all its national teams. Under these kits, the Welsh won the Six Nations Tournament with the Grand Slam in 2012 and then again in 2019. The partnership ended early in 2020 when the federation handed its shirts to another supplier. These twelve years established the brand within the rugby landscape, with very fitted shirts and compression base layers worn under the match jersey.
A studded shoe Under Armour is first chosen based on the surface. Screwed studs are essential on the sodden pitches of winter, molded ones on firm grass, and the AG sole on synthetic turf. The position then refines the choice: a prop or second row player looks for a boot that supports the ankle and a stable sole for scrummaging, while a winger prefers a low, lightweight shoe for speed. In terms of size, try the pair in the evening, when the foot has swollen during the day, with a match sock, leaving half a centimetre in front of the big toe.
Good bargains can be found in the good deals, promotions, clearance, sales, Black Friday. The new arrivals showcase the latest models. The highlights of the year follow a consistent pattern: Black Friday in late autumn, the year-end holidays, the winter sales, the French Days in spring, followed by the summer sales and back-to-school time.
The American, British, and European sizing charts do not always align exactly. So, rely on the length of your foot measured in centimeters, which you compare to the brand's guide rather than your usual number.
Remove the dirt with a brush right after leaving the field, rinse the sole with lukewarm water, and stuff the upper with newspaper. Drying should be done in the air, away from a radiator that would harden the synthetic upper and weaken the glues.
On heavy ground, screw-in studs with aluminium tips sink into the mud and hold firm during scrums and lineouts. Their length is regulated by World Rugby, and the referee can check before the kick-off that no tip is damaged.
When the molded studs are worn down, the upper separates from the sole, or the heel counter no longer holds the heel. A player who alternates between synthetic and grass benefits from having two pairs, each suited to their surface.
Half a centimetre, up to one centimetre at most: a shoe that's too big allows the foot to slide and causes blisters. It's better to buy a new pair in the right size each year than to play in shoes that float.
